The epic's main hero is Prince Rama, who was sentenced to fourteen years of forest exile as a result of courtly intrigue. He had taken refuge in exile with his wife, Sita, and brother, Lakshmana. His other brother, Bharata, has taken over so far. One day, the Web was kidnapped by Ravana, king of the Rakashas, to the island of Lanku. But Rama, with the help of the Monkey People and with the faithful Monkey King Hanuman, regained it. Both eventually returned to Ayodhji, where Rama became king and ruled fairly for many centuries.
